Hot plates are used for everything from conducting experiments in laboratories to heating food in college dorm rooms (often against resident housing rules). If you are going to use a hot plate, there are several rules you should follow to ensure your safety and the safety of others.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Plug in the hot plate.

  2. Step 2

Place the contents to be heated in an appropriate container such as a pan or a beaker, and put the container on the hot plate.

  3. Step 3

Turn on the hot plate, and heat the contents until they reach the desired temperature.

  4. Step 4

Remove the container from the hot plate, place it on a trivet, turn off the hot plate and unplug it.

  5. Step 5

Use only open containers to heat contents on a hot plate. Never attempt to heat a closed jar, can or other container as it could explode.

  6. Step 6

Wear tight-fitting clothes or roll up your sleeves to make sure they do not catch fire as you reach across the hot plate.

  7. Step 7

Keep all flammable materials away from the hot plate, including paper products, volatile chemicals and other organic materials.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hot plates can be used to heat food on Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest each week. Shabbat is a day of rest on which no work is to be performed. However, it is considered OK to heat already cooked food on a hot plate, particularly if you use a timer that is set the day before Shabbat to turn on and off at a certain time.
  • Hot plate burners can cause severe burns and melt plastics. Never touch the hot plate burner, and always keep the cord away from the top of the hot plate to prevent damage.
