How to Buy a Sand Blaster

Sand blasters are used to smooth out surfaces. One of the common uses is to clean off brick. The blaster is a fairly inexpensive way to perform these tasks and it is less time-consuming than doing them by hand with sandpaper or even using a pressure washer. Before you buy a sand blaster, check out the components and make decisions on which will best suit your needs.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Set a budget. Buying power tools can be fun, but it is easy to go overboard. If you need a blaster for a single large job, then you probably do not want to spend as much as someone who will be using it on a monthly basis or for major construction projects.

  2. Step 2

Determine the length of hose you will need. Should you want the sand blaster for specific jobs, then you should measure them and give yourself a 10 percent increase in hose length. For general projects, get the longest hose you can so that you are not limiting yourself for future projects.

  3. Step 3

Decide on the duty strength. Sand blasters tend to come in basic strengths: light, medium, heavy and industrial. Each is used for specific projects. In fact, some sand blasters that are light strength are also called etchers and are used in art. Medium- or heavy-duty sand blasters are most likely what you want for household projects.

  4. Step 4

Know what type and size nozzle you need. The nozzles on sand blasters are made of different materials. The main differences will be the strength of the spray and the durability of the nozzle over time. For many uses, get a carbide nozzle, which will withstand most household use.

  5. Step 5

Find out the type of material the blaster will use. When blasters first came into use, they used sand, but now few sand blasters actually use sand as it proven to be such a health hazard. Instead they use items ranging from dry ice to ground coconut shells. You should make sure that yours uses something you can get easily.

  6. Step 6

Comparison shop. There is a wide range of prices for buying sand blasters. By looking online and checking hardware stores locally, you should be able to find a good deal with a bit of patience.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider getting a nozzle and hose kit separately from the sand blaster. You can get equipment to use for other projects and may save money as well.
