Step 1
Understand the difference between hard and soft core eroticism. Some publishers require one or the other depending on the market and who the story is geared to. The characters you create dictate how they communicate. Be sure your characters match the voice you give them.
-
Step 2
Research the market. You may find magazines that are willing to publish new and unpublished writers as well as published pros. Read hard and soft core magazines, study the stories and choose which would match your work best.
-
Step 3
Review publisher websites and submission guidelines for erotic book publishers. You can find publishers for heterosexual, homosexual and alternative erotica. Publisher websites often have calls for submission. The most current "Writer's Market" should have the most recent list of erotic publishers.
-
Step 4
Search websites that publish your genre. Some publish the work on the website; others want submissions for anthologies and contests. Websites and e-zines can be just as particular about quality as book publishers and magazines. As with all writing opportunities, make sure your work is well-written with no grammatical or mechanical errors before submission.
-
Step 5
Submit a polished, well-formed query letter to the publisher you feel may respond most favorably to your work. Be sure you know who you are writing too, and what their guidelines are. Always enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope with all manual submissions. Some publishers don't accept electronic submissions.
-
Step 6
Keep abreast of changes in the industry. The erotic market is becoming more popular and daring. As more authors recognize erotica as a viable market, the outlook for all erotic authors should improve.
