Step 1
Look up restaurant listings. Because acquiring quality fresh fish can be hard due to location, a restaurant will be the way to go.
-
Step 2
Find a restaurant that specializes in sushi first. Going to an authentic Japanese restaurant can save you from making your first sushi experience your last.
-
Step 3
Ask your server what they recommend. He or she will tell you the special of the day and what fish is the freshest. You will want the fish that arrived that day, if at all possible.
-
Step 4
Order from the sushi menu, a slip of paper where you simply mark the desired amount of a particular item.
-
Step 5
Start with California rolls. They contain no raw fish, but will offer you the chance to experience many of the flavors you get when you buy sushi.
-
Step 6
Place yourself in the chef's hands. Allow him to make recommendations for you and to serve you what he thinks is the best sushi in his restaurant. Trust the staff and the chef. They are there to make your experience a good one and to introduce you to a new culture and a new way of eating.
-
Step 7
Try a new sushi every time you enter a restaurant. Start with the tuna then move on to the spicy tuna. Also try the yellow tail, Red Clam, Eel, Mackerel, Octopus, Squid and of course both cooked and raw shrimp.
