How to Diagnose an Engine Problem

From Quick Guide: Auto Shop Basics
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Narrow down the problem. Is the car not starting? Running roughly? Conking out? Using too much gas?

  2. Step 2

Isolate the system most likely to cause that particular problem. If the car is conking out, the fuel system might be at fault. If it is not starting, look at the electrical system. Check the cooling system if the car is overheating.

  3. Step 3

When you have isolated the most likely system, locate the weakest link in that system. The fuel pump, for example, is often the most vulnerable part of the fuel system.

  4. Step 4

Check each successive part in the system until you find the problem.

  5. Step 5

Replace or repair the broken part.

on 8/31/2009 I have a 2000 Bravada SUV. It was running good and then just wouldn't start one day. I replaced the fuel pump and the ignition modulator but it still won't fire. What could my problem be?
