Shop Vac owners love their machines almost like a part of the family, and when the motor may start to sputter, they look in all directions to be able to fix the problem rather than just kick their family member to the curb. It doesn't take an engineering degree to replace a motor.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find the model number of the Shop Vac whose motor you want to replace. This will help you to troubleshoot and order any parts you will need. Look for the number on the tub or under the casing for the motor. If you still have the box, it is also listed on the carton's flap.

  2. Step 2

Visit the Shopvac.com website and scroll through the "Frequently Asked Questions." Your problem may be listed here and you may find that you don't need to change the entire motor, you just may need to order some new filters. You also can email the folks at Shop Vac and explain your problem. Do this before investing money into your old machine or buying a new one.

  3. Step 3

If a repair is required, order the parts you need, using the model number. Once you have them, arrange your screw driver, a T25, the new motor and your parts. Set out a tarp to work on.

  4. Step 4

Take the top part of the vacuum off. This is the lid where you plug in the hoses when you use the Vac. Flip it upside down and unscrew all the screws. Take the motor out and replace it with the new motor. Replace the screws and you are ready to Vac.
