How to Start a Religious Organization
A religious organization is not unlike any other business venture. It requires board members, a marketing plan, a strategy for securing members and a financial plan to stay economically sound. To start a religious organization, you also need a mission statement, goals and objectives. Establishing the corporation properly in the beginning will help the religious organization operate effectively.

1
Decide what type of denomination the organization will be. Choose from Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist, Pentecostal or some of the denomination. Establishing this early will facilitate your marketing efforts later. Research the bylaws and general rules of the proposed denomination before deciding.
-
2
Determine your goals and objectives, such as attracting new members or serving as a community establishment for programs and events. This information should be included in any paperwork you file for legal documentation. Keep copies on file in the organization's corporate office.
-
-
3
Establish a Board of Directors to compose rules, by-laws, governing decrees and general business operations.
-
4
File the paperwork with the county clerk's office of the city in which the organization will be based. When you start a religious organization, the proper paperwork must be on record, including the names of each member of the governing body of the organization and a summary of their roles, responsibilities and compensation.
-
5
Develop a financial marketing plan to outline how the organization will generate revenue and distribute any profits. Although this is a broad function for the governing board, an outline should be developed as an economic guide for funding.
-
6
Write a press release for the local and national newspapers and radio stations to advise them of this new religious organization.
