How to Decide Between Generic and Name Brand Baby Formula

When it comes to some items, you get what you pay for. But that's not necessarily the case when it comes to infant formula. This is a primary form of nutrition for babies, and the Food and Drug Administration holds manufacturers to high standards. Those same standards apply to generic formula as well as name brands.

Talk to your doctor. Some babies require special types of formula that may not be offered by a generic brand. Your pediatrician can tell you what types of formula are best for your baby.

Look at your budget. Formula is expensive and it can take quite a chunk out of your monthly budget. Price different cans of formula and determine what it would cost to feed your baby for an entire month. You may decide to go with generic formula to save some money.

Research the price difference. Because generic and name brand formulas are held to the same standards, many parents wonder what causes name brand formulas to cost so much more. One reason for the higher cost is that some formula manufacturers spend big bucks on advertising. And they also offer free samples to pediatricians and to new parents. You don't see this type of marketing with generic brands, and that's the main reason for the price difference.

Compare the ingredients. Because of the strict FDA requirements, many ingredients are similar in name brand and generic brand formula.
