How to Shop at Boston's Filene's Basement
Filene's Basement, the retailer that calls itself the "oldest off-price department store," was founded in 1908 as a spin-off of Boston's tony Filene's department store. Today, Filene's Basement is thriving with over 30 stores in eight states. The bargain retailer is known for prices that drop the longer an item remains unsold.

1
Arrive Early. Filene's Basement stores are notoriously busy. Plan to arrive early to beat the crowd and get first choice on all of the newly-added merchandise.
-
2
Dress for easy changing. Filene's Basement stores do not have traditional changing rooms. The only way to try on clothes before you buy them is to change in the aisles. Wearing a leotard, tights or a bodysuit makes changing easier.

Learn Filene's pricing system. Each item is marked with a price and a date. After 14 days in the store, the price is reduced by 25 percent; after 28 days, the price is 50 percent lower; and after 42 days, the price is 75 percent lower. Any unsold items are given to charity after 54 days. There are signs in the store to help you with the dates.

Attend the annual bridal event. Filene's Basement is known for its annual Bridal Gown Sale. This event, held in spring at each of the company's stores, features designer wedding gowns for as little as $249. The shopping is usually frenetic, but the savings are substantial. Check the Filene's Basement website (see Resources below)for specific dates.
