Jewelry design is a great way to express oneself and a wonderful hobby. The options for jewelry creation are limitless and one can even turn a profit on their endeavors. However, making that first leap into a new creative endeavor can be a bit intimidating. Follow some steps to help design and create jewelry to express yourself through this ancient and beautiful craft.

  1. Step 1

    Decide what kind of jewelry you want to make. Research various stones and materials to determine the medium you are initially interested in.

  2. Step 2

    Visit a craft store and browse through the jewelry making section. Take note of various beads, stones, leathers and other materials that catch your eye.

  3. Step 3

    Sketch your design ideas on paper to get a better feel for what you want the jewelry to look like. Indicate on your sketches what the materials are that you will be using and then go in search of those specific materials.

  4. Step 4

    Find the necessary clasping and backing for your jewelry, ask the salesperson if you need help determining what kind of clasping you will need for your piece. Purchase bracelet clasps, necklace clasps and earring backs so you can experiment with various jewelry methods.

  5. Step 5

    Find a type of wire or chain that will be appropriate for the stone you are using, bear in mind the cost of precious metals such as gold or platinum. Consider using wire or leather to begin with to string your jewelry.

  6. Step 6

    Acquire other necessary tools for making jewelry such as pliers, tweezers, mandrels, scissors, wire cutters, and hot soldering tools for metallurgy work. Research various methods of jewelry making such as wire wrapping, gemstone setting, bead work and mold based jewelry making.

  • Buy your precious stones in bulk as they typically are cheaper.
  • If you are new to jewelry making try simple bead work to get started and branch off into other areas once you are comfortable.
