How to Save Money With Ice Cube Trays

Very often when you cook, only about half of a jar or can of an ingredient gets used and the rest goes into the fridge. Once it's stuck behind the milk and juice, you forget about it and open another. But if you make new use of your ice cube trays, you can save yourself from wasting good food and good money.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Store leftover pasta sauce. After using what you need for one meal, pour the remaining sauce into an ice cube tray and freeze it until needed. The single servings work well when a recipe calls for a small amount, or if you're heating leftovers for your kids on soccer night.

  2. Step 2

Stock up on soup stock. After you prepare soup, store it in your freezer in ice cube trays for future use. The small amounts of stock that are often needed in recipes will be at your fingertips, ready to go.

  3. Step 3

Save the morning's coffee. If you're a regular coffee drinker and occasionally have half a pot remaining, you can freeze coffee cubes in your ice cube trays to add to a cold version of the beverage. When you have a hankering for an iced coffee, you can add one of your coffee cubes without diluting it with a regular ice cube.

  4. Step 4

Freeze some egg whites. This is a great way to save money by not having to run out to the store for a new carton when you realize the one in your fridge has expired. You'll already have them stored in your freezer, and they can stay there for up to a year.

  5. Step 5

Don't dump that extra gravy. Gravy is another alternative to soup stock in recipes and there's usually leftover gravy after meals. Rather than throwing it away, store it in the freezer in your ice cube trays for use in a future recipe.

  6. Step 6

Spoon some applesauce into ice cube trays. You can use applesauce in health-conscious recipes as an alternative to butter or margarine. Freezing means you can avoid having to open a whole jar every time you need some.

  7. Step 7

Rescue your herbs. If you have herbs that are about to spoil, store them in ice cube trays with water filled to the brim to keep them fresh in the freezer.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you use your ice cube trays to store food items in the freezer, remember that each section holds about two teaspoons of liquid measurement.
  • After the trays of food items are frozen, you can transfer them to a freezer bag and label the contents.
