The common privet (Ligustrum vulgare) is a multi-stemmed deciduous shrub that usually is grown as a hedge. It tolerates shearing well and grows to a height and width of 12 to 15 feet. Its dark green leaves, white spring flowers and black fruit appear in September. Grow multiple privets for a great privacy hedge that requires little maintenance.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Privet shrub
  • Shovel
  • Water
  • Mulch or other organic material
  • Knife or pruner
  1. Step 1

Establish the planting location. Privet prefer a full sun location. They will also grow in partial shade, but may not become as dense. The shrub will grow well in all soil types with the exception of wet soil.

  2. Step 2

Prepare the shrub for planting. Privet are usually purchased as bare-root specimens and transplant well. Remove any packaging carefully so roots are not damaged. Bare-root specimens should be planted in the early spring while it is still dormant. Use a knife or pruner to trim any dead or damaged roots.

  3. Step 3

Dig the planting hole. Clear any organic material from the planting site, such as weeds and garden debris. Dig a planting hole 3 to 4 times the width of the plant's root spread. The hole should be deep enough for the plant to grow at the depth it was originally intended. Create a small mound of soil at the bottom of the planting hole.

  4. Step 4

Position the shrub. Place the roots over the mound in the planting hole. Make sure it is straight. Backfill a small amount of the original soil to stabilize the shrub, firmly stamping the soil around the roots. Fill the planting hole with water and allow to absorb. Backfill the remaining soil and water again deeply.

  5. Step 5

Dress, or mulch, the planting area. Spread a layer of mulch 3 to 4-inches deep around the shrub and over the planting area. Mulching the site helps to retain moisture, inhibit weeds and gives a finished look to the garden.

Tips & Warnings
  • The common privet is suitable for planting in Hardiness Zones 4 through 7. Check with your local nursery or garden center for cultivars suited for your area.
  • Keep the shrub well watered. During the first and second year after transplant, provide about an inch of water per week.
  • There are many privet cultivars available. Pyramidale is commonly used as a hedge because of its pyramindal shape. It is also hardy.
  • Before mulching the planting area, create a basin around the shrub so water will be directed towards the roots.
  • The privet should be pruned immediately after flowering in the spring. Pruning can also be done before blooming to remove the flowers. Some people find the scent of the privet flowers unpleasant. The privet tolerates shearing.
