How to Grow Black-Eyed Peas

Black-eyed peas, also known as cowpeas, grow inside of pods that are similar to green beans. The beans themselves are tan with black circles in the middle. Black-eyed peas, which originated in Africa, grow best in warmer climates. It's a tradition, especially in the South, to eat black-eyed peas every New Year's Day for good luck. You can plant and grow them right in your garden.

    Instructions

      • 1

Add compost and plant your seeds for the black-eyed peas into the garden. Do this after the last frost, when the soil has reached 65 degrees or higher. Make sure the soil is rich and well-drained. Then, wait for the seeds to germinate within 7 to 10 days.

      • 2

Allow the black-eyed peas to get plenty of sun. Put fertilizer around the area as soon as the seeds start to grow.

      • 3

Space out your plants to allow room for growth. They should be at least 3 inches apart.

      • 4

Water your plants frequently, but keep the leaves of the plant dry to prevent fungus diseases. Buy a general purpose fertilizer to use around the black-eyed peas. Apply it once a month to maximize growth. Pick the black-eyed pea pods when they are young, tough and slightly stringy.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Use insecticides or repellents if necessary to keep the insects away. Also, keep in mind that deer and rabbits are also attracted to black-eyed peas.

    • Use the black-eyed peas in salads or cook them as a side dish.
