How to Diagnose Cold Sores

Some people refer to cold sores as fever blisters; however, they are actually the result of exposure to the herpes simplex virus, HSV-1 or HSV-2. Cold sores are very common, very contagious and there is no way to cure or prevent getting them if your skin has been in contact with the active virus. There are steps to reduce their frequency and duration after your physician has diagnosed them.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Expect varied reactions with different people. Some may have no symptoms after contracting an HSV infection, while others develop painful sores. You may first notice a sore mouth, fever, sore throat and possibly swollen lymph glands. The cold sore usually breaks open and drains a clear liquid before crusting over and disappearing. The process takes about a week for most people, and reoccurrences are common.

Step2
Provide your physician with information regarding possible exposure to the herpes simplex virus to help him diagnose your condition. Usually he can determine whether you have cold sores by examination and further testing isn't necessary. HSV spreads through coughing, sneezing, kissing or some other direct contact with drainage from a cold sore. Transmission from one person to another is also possible by touching something someone with a cold sore has used. However, lab tests available if a definite diagnosis isn't possible,by interview and examination alone.
Step3
Treat severe or embarrassing cold sores with topical ointments or antiviral medications with the advice of your physician. They relieve symptoms and limit the duration of the outbreak but don't provide a cure to prevent future eruptions.
