Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Be able-bodied. Scow boats are most often used to transport freight or as a dumper and therefore need able-bodied people to work them as workers need to move and operate heavy equipment. Be able to lift fairly heavy weights and withstand the harsh conditions that come with being at sea.
Step2
Get the qualifications. Not many employees on the seas have college degrees but to captain a scow or almost any type of boat, you need the licenses. The most commonly requested qualification is the USCG captain's license. Take a course (see resources) and obtain this or one of the many other qualifications such as the mariner training and certification or a master of towing.
Step3
Have some experience. Nobody is going to give a captain's job to someone who has never been out to sea. By having previous experience in the industry as a deckhand, salvager or in any other capacity will greatly improve your chances. Demonstrate any related skills such as navigation, knowledge of safety procedures or anchoring and take any opportunities available to learn new skills.
Step4
Search the listings. Find current openings on line (see resources) or by contacts in the industry. Apply for positions only when you meet the requirements and have several good references available.
Step5
Work your way up. The most obvious way to become a scow boat captain is to prove yourself in the business by hard work and years of practice. Nothing can compensate for hands on training and starting as a trainee or apprentice might be the first step to achieving your goal.
