The Swiss had a good idea when they used barrels to convey messages on the collars of their St. Bernards. Use a much-simplified but just-as-useful version of that same concept for your dog. Recycle an old film canister by turning it into a dog tag, and find a truly functional use for what would have been a piece of trash. Here's how to do it:

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Use the permanent marker to write your dog's name and your phone number on the exterior of the canister for easy identification should your dog get lost.

  2. Step 2

Cut two vertical slits about ½ inch apart in the other side of the film canister. They will need to be large enough for your dog's collar to fit through.

  3. Step 3

Weave your dog's collar through the slits in the canister.

  4. Step 4

Write any pertinent identifying information on the piece of paper. This could include your name and address, other phone numbers where you can be reached, your vet's phone number and so forth.

  5. Step 5

Include information such as any special medical needs or allergies your dog has on the piece of paper. This is helpful if your pet gets lost, but it's also useful if you are out of town and someone else is watching your dog. That way they won't have to worry about remembering all of this information because it will be right there in the canister.

  6. Step 6

Fold up the piece of paper and place it inside the film canister. Put the lid on the canister, making sure that it is on nice and snugly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add to the piece of paper a contact number where you can be reached when you go on vacation. Include an in-town contact number as well, in case your dog runs away or gets lost while you are out of town.
