How to Make Film Canister People

Do you have a lot of old film canisters that you're just not sure what to do with? Don't throw them away. Instead, recycle them to make this fun and oh-so-easy craft project. Film canister people are a great craft for children of all ages, and it's a good way to turn a piece of trash into a treasure. Here's how to make film canister people:

Things You'll Need:

• Film canister
• Earplug or craft pompom
• Hot glue gun
• Small plastic eyes
• Markers
• Yarn
• Pipe cleaner
• Small piece of Styrofoam
• Felt or denim
• Scissors

1. Place the canister upside down so that the open end is now facing downward.

2. Glue the earplug or pompom to the top of the canister as the head. Add the eyes, then draw the rest of the face on using the markers. Finish by gluing some yarn on for hair.

3. Set the canister lid on top of the earplug/pompom as a hat. Hot glue it in place.

4. Arrange a single piece of pipe cleaner for the person's arms and glue it on at the back of the canister.

5. Cut a small round platform for the person to stand on from the Styrofoam. Color it with a marker for a little added effect. Or, instead of making individual platforms, you could make one large platform for several canister people to stand on.

6. Draw little pieces of clothing, shoes and a hat onto the felt or denim, then cut them out and glue them onto the person.

Tips & Warnings

• Substitute a liquid glue for the hot glue if children will be making this craft alone or unsupervised.
• Design a set of canister people with a theme to them, such as choir singers or snowpeople.
• Look for small accessories around the house that you could use on your canister people; perhaps an old earring or a paperclip, for example.
