You might find yourself in a situation at some point when being able to pick a lock is not only desirable but necessary. But you don't have to be a professional criminal to know how to pick a lock easily and with limited resources. In fact, all you need is a paper clip and a tool to use as a tension wrench. Here's how to do it:

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large paper clip
  • Hammer
  • Tension wrench or substitute
  1. Step 1

Straighten the outer ring of the paper clip so that you now have a long, straight piece of metal.

  2. Step 2

Hammer out the end of the paper clip so that it is flat. Use the hammer on a smooth concrete floor or anvil so that you won't damage anything.

  3. Step 3

Place the tension wrench or wrench substitute in the cylinder of the lock with the paper clip above it.

  4. Step 4

Apply a gentle pressure to the cylinder with the wrench, slightly turning the wrench as you do so.

  5. Step 5

Manipulate the paper clip while working the wrench. Slowly move the paper clip in and out while pushing up on the pins in the lock. Continue doing this until you have raised and set the pins.

  6. Step 6

Follow the complete instructions for picking a lock as outlined in the eHow article "How to Pick a Lock" (see link below).

Tips & Warnings
  • Substitute another paper clip for the tension wrench. Straighten the entire paper clip, then make an "L" shape by bending one of the ends. You can also use a small screwdriver in place of the tension wrench.
