How to Make Onyx Necklaces

Throughout history, onyx has been thought to bring powers of protection and defensive magic. It was often worn in ancient battles to protect against danger. Onyx comes in various solid colors such as red, brown, white and black. The darker shades of onyx work well in creating cameos. Black onyx is affordable, and gives a look of great wealth to the person who wears it. Onyx is often combined with pearls in jewelry designs. Read on to learn how to make onyx necklaces.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pliers
  • Ruler
  • Wire cutters
  • Softflex wire
  • Turquoise, black and white rounds
  • Drops seed, aqua
  • Black onyx chips/agate
  • Heishi beads rolled (looks like small donut holes)
  • buttermilk triangle seed OP buttermilk
  • 8/0 SL clear seed
  • Toggle
  • Crimp beads
  • Crimp bead covers (optional)
  1. Step 1

    Gather your materials.

  2. Step 2

    Use a ruler to cut one piece of softflex the length longer then 20 inches. The final length will be 19 inches.

  3. Step 3

    Add a crimp bead. Loop the wire through the ring clasp and back through the crimp. Crush the crimp bead with the crimp tool. Trim the edges and tuck into the next bead or finding.

  4. Step 4

    Cover the crimp bead and crush it gently over the bead.

  5. Step 5

    String one drop and three triangles. Repeat 12 times.

  6. Step 6

    String one chip, three triangles, a drop, three triangles, a Heishi and four seed beads. String a chip, three triangles, a drop, three triangles, a Heishi, four seed beads, a Heishi, three triangles, a drop and three triangles. Repeat pattern four times.

  7. Step 7

    String a chip.

  8. Step 8

    String three triangles and a drop. Repeat 12 times.

  9. Step 9

    Add a crimp bead and loop through the ring on the other part of the toggle clasp and back through the crimp bead. Crush the crimp bead and trim the end. Tuck the remaining part into the next bead. Now you are done making your beautiful onyx necklace.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can choose different colored beads for any jewelry piece you're making. Buy beads online, or through jewelry magazines and craft stores.
