When you are looking for a hobby to start, knitting is a great fun craft to choose. All you need to get started is a skein of yarn and a pair of knitting needles. The garter stitch is also known as the knit stitch. Here are the steps needed to make the garter stitch.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Skein of yarn any color
  • Pair of knitting needles sizes 6 to 8
  1. Step 1

Get size 8 knitting needles and a skein of yarn. Hold one needle with your right hand and cast on 10 stitches. Change the needle with the stitches to your left hand.

  2. Step 2

Pick up the needle without stitches with your right hand. Slide your right hand needle's tip into the first stitch on your left hand needle. The needles should make a x. The yarn should be hanging down the back of the needle in your left hand. Bring the yarn up to the left of the back of the needles and wrap it around the x of both needles, bring the yarn to the right.

  3. Step 3

Slide the stitches to the end of the needles. Make sure to pick up the loose yarn as you pull the needle in your right hand forward through the loop on the left hand needle. Slide the right hand needle off the end of the needle in your left hand. This pulls the stitch off the left needle, making a stitch.

  4. Step 4

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 until all the stitches on the needle in your left hand have been knitted. Swap the needles so that the needle with the stitches is in your left hand and the needle without the stitches is in your right hand. Repeat from Step 2 until the piece is as long as you want. Cast off the stitches.
