Model the kind of behavior you wish your students to demonstrate to avoid having to discipline them in the first place. Greet the children the first time you see them and be respectful of them. Make an effort to learn their names so you can easily call out to one, or identify them if a situation needs to be reported. Using children's names personalizes a situation and helps the child view their actions as something that has effects on them and others in a personal way, rather than just being an action.

Target the potential troublemakers. This is not done with malicious intent, but rather with an attitude of early intervention for discipline. Spotting the signs of anger, illness, arguments or trouble at home allows the educator to stop small problems before they escalate into major disturbances in school.

Schedule activities or develop a routine in whatever capacity the educator is in charge of. Whether it's the school bus driver, the playground monitor, the teacher or principal, establishing a routine allows students to know what to expect and what is expect of them when being supervised or taught by different individuals.
