Rugs add beauty and warmth to any room and as more houses are adding living space by converting areas outdoors to be functional and inviting, an outdoor rug is a wonderful addition. Use these tips on how to choose and buy an outdoor rug to ensure the rug you purchase will give you years of satisfaction and use. Read on to learn how to buy an outdoor rug.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide on a price range that works for your budget. If you know going into the purchase that you can't afford more than $75, then that will allow you to look at rugs that fit in your price range rather than falling in love with a rug only to find out that it's $250 and you can't afford to buy it.

  2. Step 2

Outline the main function of the room where the rug will go. Is it a playroom for children, a relaxation place to have coffee and enjoy the paper in the morning sun or is it an entertainment room for friends and family. This will give you an idea of the durability you need to buy in an outdoor rug to withstand and the kind of traffic expected.

  3. Step 3

Measure the outdoor space and decide how much of the floor you want covered by the rug and what the minimum size for the rug can be. This will give you the size requirements needed for shopping when you go to buy the rug.

  4. Step 4

Find the personality of the space. Does an oval rug compliment the furnishings or would a square one be better, for instance. Maybe the outdoor room needs only a runner. Patterns, braiding and solid colors with minimal designs are all available. Traditional or contemporary settings and the color pallet are all considerations needed for choosing a perfect outdoor rug when you go to buy it.

  5. Step 5

Figure out how much time you want to devote to cleaning the outdoor rug. Some are very low maintenance needing only soap and a garden hose. Others may require professional cleaning, so take maintenance into consideration when you but an outdoor rug.
