How to Make an Egg Float in a Glass of Water

If you put an egg into a glass of water, it sinks. You can make the egg float by changing the structure of the water. This is an interesting experiment for kids to learn about density. Do this as a family project together, as a home school project or as a science project for school. The following will show you how to make an egg float in a glass of water.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Glass
    • Water
    • Egg
    • Salt
    • Tablespoon
      • 1

Fill up a glass halfway with cold water from the tap.

      • 2

Choose a raw, uncooked egg with no visible cracks in the shell. Place the egg gently into the water.

      • 3

Watch as the egg sinks to the bottom of the glass. The egg sinks because it is more dense than the water.

      • 4

Add a tbsp. of salt to the water. Stir the water to help the salt dissolve and distribute throughout the glass of water.

      • 5

Add more salt if you need to. Add a tbsp. at a time, until you get a reaction.

      • 6

Watch as the egg begins to float in the water when you have added enough salt.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Adding salt to the water puts more molecules into the water to make it denser. The more salt you add, the more dense the water becomes until it finally becomes denser than the egg. This makes the egg float.

    • If you weigh a cup of fresh water and a cup of saltwater, the saltwater will weigh more because the saltwater is denser than the fresh water.

    • Ask an adult help you with this experiment.
