How to Stitch a Fern Stitch
The fern stitch, also referred to as the fern leaf stitch, is a fairly simple stitch that's used in embroidery, crewel work and silk ribbon embroidery. It's a quick, versatile stitch that's perfect as filler and that makes it popular in patchwork and crazy quilt design as well. Read on to learn how to stitch a fern stitch.

Transfer the design for the needlework onto the fabric. Mark a line the desired length of the fern leaf.

Insert the fabric into an embroidery hoop. Use a frame for larger pieces of embroidery. Frames come in a variety of sizes.

Stitch along the designated line, coming up at the beginning point then going down at the point that is the desired length of each of the sections of the fern stitch. Hold a few inches of the thread on the backside of the fabric and work the stitches over it to lock it into place.

Continue along the line making continuous stitches of equal length to the end of the designated line. Do not fasten off. Consider the stitched line the central spine of the fern stitch.

Work along that line and make one straight stitch at either side of the spine at the starting point of each stitch in the line. Arrange the three equal-length stitches so that they radiate at similar angles along the original line.

Weave ends of threads back through finished stitches on the wrong side of the fabric. Do not tie off or knot the threads.
