The rosette stitch is often referred to as the "rosette chain." It is a decorative stitch often used to create borders on sewing and embroidery projects. Work this stitch with a thread that has a good twist to create a substantial braided line. Work the rosette stitch around a small circle with each chain pointing outward to create floral motifs. Read on to learn how to stitch a rosette stitch.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Transfer the design for the needlework onto the fabric. Insert the fabric into an embroidery hoop. Keep the fabric taut as it is being worked.

  2. Step 2

Work from left to right. Bring the thread to the front of the fabric. Hold 2 inches on the backside and work the tail into the stitches. Do not knot the thread.

  3. Step 3

Insert the needle to make a small stitch. Wrap the thread around the needle as with a twisted chain stitch.

  4. Step 4

Pass the needle through the fabric again. Pull the loop until it lies flat against the fabric but it not pulled tightly. Bring the needle above the knot just under the right-hand top thread.

  5. Step 5

Slide the needle under the thread but do not pierce the fabric. Continue along a line to make a chain or work around a central point to create a floral design.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use pouncing, an iron-on transfer, a direct transfer method or draw the design with a pencil.
