Microsoft Excel 2007 offers an array of pre-set styles. If, however, you want a style that is not already included in the Cell Styles gallery, you can easily create your own styles. This also works if you have formatted cells whose formatting you want to modify or duplicate and save as a style for use in other cells. Read on to learn how to create styles in Excel 2007.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Creating a New Style

Step1
Click on the "Home" tab at the top of the document. Find the Styles group in the menu then click on "Cell Styles." The Cell Styles gallery will appear, from which you will select "New Cell Style." The "Style" dialog box will then appear.
Step2
Type in a name for your style in the "Style name" field within the dialog box. Uncheck any formatting elements that you don't want included in your new style.
Step3
Hit the "Format" button and the "Format Cells" dialog box will appear.
Step4
Define the style you want by going through the various tabs in the dialog box and choosing your desired style characteristics.
Step5
Click "OK" at the bottom of the dialog box. Your new style will now be published to the Cell Styles gallery.

Modifying and Saving a Cell Style

Step1
Go back to Cell Styles under the Home tab.
Step2
Select and right-click on the cell whose style you want to use. Choose either Modify or Duplicate on the right-click drop-down menu. The Style dialog box will then appear.
Step3
Type in a style name in the dialog box. If you are simply duplicating the cell style then you are finished at this point. If you are modifying the style, however, then click on the "Format" button. This will bring up the "Format Cells" dialog box.
Step4
Follow Steps 4 and 5 above to create the style you want. Don't forget that you can uncheck any formatting elements that you don't want included in your new style in the Style dialog box.

Tips & Warnings

  • Delete the Style you created by returning to the Cell Styles gallery, right clicking on the style name and hitting Delete.
  • Use the Format Painter tool instead of defining a new style if you simply want to apply the formatting of one cell to another cell. This tool is found under the Home tab in the Clipboard group. To use it, select the cell whose format you want to use and hit the "Format Painter" button. Then select the cell range to which you want that formatting applied.
