Tying a knot to secure beads on a cord isn't as easy as it sounds. Even experienced jewelry makers can have trouble getting the knot to tighten close enough to the bead to hold it into place evenly. Using an awl to tie a knot in your silk or nylon cord can make the process easier. Here's how to tie an awl knot in jewelry making.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Awl
  • Silk or nylon cord
  • Beads
  1. Step 1

Secure one end of your silk or nylon cord to a fastener.

  2. Step 2

String a bead onto the cord.

  3. Step 3

Make a loop around two of your fingers with the loose end of the cord.

  4. Step 4

Drop the end of the cord between your fingers to make a loose overhand knot.

  5. Step 5

Stick the tip of the awl through the center of the knot.

  6. Step 6

Slide the knot carefully toward the bead while pulling the loose end of the cord with your other hand.

  7. Step 7

Remove the awl and pull the knot tight.

  8. Step 8

Repeat with each bead until the necklace is complete.
