How to Make Housing for a Pet Rat

Pet rats spend much of their time in their cage so it's important that their homes are roomy, stimulating and comfortable. When you're making housing for your rat there are several important things that you need to make sure your rat's home is comfortable.

Instructions

1. Choose a cage for your pet rat's housing. It should be at least 24-by-12 inches, but the bigger the better. You can use a large aquarium as well, but make sure the lid allows for plenty of ventilation. Aquariums will have to be cleaned out more often than cages, at least 1 time per week.

2. Get bedding for the cage. Use cat litter that is made up of recycled newspaper such as Yesterday's News. Throw in a few paper towels and let your rat shred it and add to his bedding.

3. Make a nest box for your rat's housing so he can hide when he wants to escape. A shoe box will do the trick. Make sure your pet has plenty of bedding to put in the box.

4. Place toys in the box. Pet rats need stimulation. Put ropes and ladders in the cage for him to climb. Give him tunnels to sneak through and platforms to jump on.

5. Use ceramic bowls for food and water when you're making housing for your pet rat. These are less likely to tip over.

Tips & Warnings

• When finding a place to put your rat's cage keep in mind that they need somewhere that is quiet during the day, which is their sleep time, yet gets enough home traffic that they can be sociable with you.

• Limit the access that other pets have to your rat's home, as some pets may make your rat feel threatened. Keep the housing up off the floor such as on a table or stand to help the pet rat feel more safe and secure.

• Avoid using cedar and pine pellets for your rat's bedding. Cedar and Pine can cause respiratory and liver problems in your rat.

• Make sure your rat's home is not in direct sunlight or in a drafty area.
