Vibrato is a musical technique used in both singing and playing musical instruments to create expression and interest through the pulsating of pitch. This technique is commonly used in string instruments. It is used quite commonly in classical music, especially from the Romantic period. Follow the steps below to do the vibrato technique on a cello.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin with hands off the cello. With the left hand, or the hand used to play the notes, form a C shape as if holding a drink. The movement of the hand must be as if holding a drink and tipping it back.

  2. Step 2

Place the left hand on the neck. The thumb must be on the back of the neck, about two inches below the peg box. The middle finger must be placed directly opposite on the front of the neck on the string of the note to be played.

  3. Step 3

Pull the bow across the string to play the note. Move the hand up and down as if tipping a drink back and forth, but keep the finger in the same place. The movement is mostly in the shoulder and upper arms, but try and keep the arm and shoulders loose and relaxed. This movement alternately flattens and sharpens the note which can create a richer sound.

  4. Step 4

Change the intensity of the note by moving the hand fast or slow. This technique is the most moving when used on a long, slowly played note.
