How to Encourage Friendships Between Preschoolers

Unlike the parallel-play exhibited by babies and toddlers, preschoolers are more adept with engaging in active play and forming peer bonds. Relationships between preschoolers are forged through common interests, such as favorite toys, rather than the child's personality, but she's also learning the intricate rules of establishing friendships. Read on to learn how to encourage friendships between preschoolers.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Encourage one-on-one play dates. Preschoolers can become overwhelmed and stressed if asked to play with more than one child, so it's best to schedule peer play dates with just one child at a time. To entertain your child's varied interests, make sure to schedule time with each of his friends. For example, meet a rambunctious friend at the park or invite a more reserved friend over to play dress-up.
Step2
Practice taking turns. Friendships can only succeed if there is a healthy balance of give and take. If your child always plays with a particular toy but never shares, conflict will ensue.
Step3
Show your preschooler the correct way to build friendships by modeling appropriate behavior. Even young children don't want to be around others who are bossy or whiney. Teach your child that friendships are built out of mutual respect and kind actions.
Step4
Teach your preschooler to resolve conflicts with words. Although preschoolers are better able to handle their anger, even a well-behaved child who is stressed may resolve to hitting, biting, pushing or name-calling in order to get her way or be heard. Let your child know that it is never alright to hurt a friend with actions or words.
