How to Reduce DVD Storage Space

One big advantage of DVDs over tapes has been storage. Still, collecting all those movies and TV seasons will start taking up your space. You can find ways to consolidate discs into smaller cases and reduce the storage space even more. With smart work, you can store at least twice as many discs on the same shelf. Read on to learn how to cut down on the space you use for media storage.

Difficulty: Easy

1. Get slim DVD cases, preferably those that can store two in one. These can be found at electronic factory stores and often come several to a pack. Some of your compilation packs may have slim cases with them.
2. Transfer your movie discs into the slim cases. If you have two films that are similar (like a movie and its sequel) you can place both in a dual-disc slim case. Fold the movies' slipcovers and slide each in a side of the sleeve.
3. Use your original DVD cases to store your compilation packs like the TV seasons. A standard DVD case can hold up to six discs if you do it right, especially if the case has two tabs inside.
4. Get protective slipcovers for the discs. This way you can keep multiple discs in one case and reduce the risk of scratching or other damage. You may need to trim the slipcovers' edges slightly so they'll fit.
5. Label the edges of the cases with a magic marker. This will be needed if you don't have the original slipcover edge appearing. Since most cases are black, use silver or another bright color marker.

Tips & Warnings

• If you want to use the same slipcovers from the original cases, you may need to trim the edges by a half inch or so for them to fit in the smaller sleeves.
