How to Set Image Properties in Dreamweaver

When you insert an image into Dreamweaver, there are certain properties that Dreamweaver will automatically apply to your image. You may find it in the best interest of your site to change some of these properties and set some additional properties. You can do this using the directions below and your Properties palette to make the changes.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Dreamweaver

Step1
Start Dreamweaver and open an existing file that contains an image of which you would like to set the properties.
Step2
Select the image you would like to change the properties of by clicking on it with your mouse. You will see black handles around the image when it is selected.
Step3
Notice that in the top portion of your Properties palette you now have image properties that you can change and apply to your image.
Step4
Type in a name for your image in the textbox below the thumbnail image in the "Properties" palette if you would like to rename the image.
Step5
Use your keyboard to type in a value for width "W" and height "H" to resize your picture.
Step6
Change the source ("Src") of the document by clicking the folder icon besides the text box to choose a new place to save your image and do the same to the "Link" option if you would like to set you image to link to an internal or external link.
Step7
Type in a name for the alternate text of your image in the "Alt" text box. This is the text that will displayed if a visitor can not view your image for some reason.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose the "Insert" menu and click on "Image" to open the "Select Image Source" dialog box. From here you can choose an image to open and insert into your Dreamweaver document.
  • If you don't see the Properties palette, choose the "Window" menu and click on "Properties" to open it onto your desktop.
