How to Use the Firehose on Slashdot
Slashdot is a site that was designed to give news and updates on technology related topics. You can find everything that you need to know about science, hardware, games, developers and more on Slashdot. To make users feel part of the editorial process, they have a Firehose tool that can be used to control the material put on the site.

Click on the "Firehose" link on the homepage. You are then directed to an explanation of how this tool works. Read the instructions before you begin rating any of the content.

Log in or create an account. To use all of the Firehose options, you need to give your log in information. If you have yet to sign up with Slashdot, you must fill out a registration form before you continue.

Filter the stories by popularity. You can use the color coded system to determine where the story falls on the Firehose. Red indicates that the story is popular while violet means that it is not.

Vote on the entries that are listed on the page. You can vote the submission up or down by clicking on either the plus or minus sign that is found next to the story.

Tag the story. By tagging the article, you will also increase its popularity status in the Firehose. You can put in whether you thought the story was insightful or full of crap.

Tips & Warnings
Since Slashdot gets so many submissions, they use the Firehose to determine which stories will be put in the main areas of the site.
There are other submissions on the Firehose besides stories. You can also find RSS feeds and journal entries.
