How to Select a Teen Diet Camp

Teen diet camps are held during the child's summer vacation. The teen goes away for several weeks and learns practical information on how to lose weight. A diet camp makes exercise and eating fun for the teen while also allowing them to socialize with kids their age. Read on to find out about teen diet camps.

  1. Step 1

    Locate a diet camp. The Summer Lady has a listing of teen diet camps on their website. Select the option to be sent a brochure for additional information (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

    Find out about calorie limitations. Teen diet camps typically have attendants abide by a certain diet program. Many programs limit the diet to 2,000 calories or less per day.

  3. Step 3

    Look for a camp that also provides therapy for campers. Research shows that many teens overeat due to emotional or psychological issues. A diet camp with a therapist on staff can help the teens work through their issues.

  4. Step 4

    Research the activities at the teen diet camp. To lose weight, the teens engage in numerous outdoor activities. Look for a camp that offers a wide variety of sports, like hiking, rafting and mountain climbing.

  5. Step 5

    Choose a camp that has an aftercare program. Ideally, the camp should provide the parent with ways to keep up the teens good eating and exercising habits.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid camps that label themselves as fat camps. A teen may fell embarrassed attending a program that goes by this name.
  • Teen diet camps don't usually accept attendants against their will. Both you and your child have to sign a consent form.
