Quilting is a folk art form that has been a part of American tradition for generations. The art of quilting is one that is usually passed from parent to child with family nuances a large part of the quilting style. Getting started at quilting isn't as hard as it looks. With the right materials, patterns and properly prepared quilting frame, your quilting adventure is just a few stitches away.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Set up the quilt frame in a convenient location where it can be left up for several days at a time.

  2. Step 2

Decide if you want a large quilt frame that will accommodate several people quilting at once or a frame just for one person.

  3. Step 3

Spread out your quilt back, batting and quilt top on the floor and pin together every few inches. Make sure that the backing is several inches larger than the quilt top and that the batting is completely inside the edges.

  4. Step 4

Set up your frame on chairs, saw horses or any sturdy structure. If using a one person quilt frame or hoop, these are usually free standing and can easily be placed in front of a comfortable chair.

  5. Step 5

Baste the quilt to the cloth attached to the two horizontal strips of the quilt frame to hold your quilt together while stitching.

  6. Step 6

Starting at one end, roll your quilt until there is a small section exposed that is held tight to make quilting easier.

  7. Step 7

Lay the roll on to the two vertical pieces of wood and begin quilting on the exposed portion. Unroll the quilt as each section is finished to expose more working area. Continue in this way until the entire quilt is finished.

Tips & Warnings
  • When using a single person quilt frame or hoop, stretch and pin the entire quilt together to prevent slipping before laying it down on the frame or inserting in the hoop.
