How to Make Dog Booties
A pair of dog booties can make your best friend comfortable in many situations. They can keep his feet dry in rainy weather and protect his paws from the heat of sidewalks in hot weather. They can also prevent injury from scratching at skin allergies or flea bites. Here's how you can make a pair of dog booties for your pet.
Things You'll Need
- ½ yard of sturdy fabric such as upholstery fabric, ripcord, denim or canvas
- 16 inches of Velcro, 1-inch wide
- Marker
- Scissors
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
Instructions

1
Cut 8 rectangular pieces of fabric about 8 by 4½ inches. Using a small bowl as a pattern, draw a rounded edge on one end of each rectangle. Cut on the line.
-
2
Put 2 pieces right side together and stitch around the dog bootie, leaving the short, straight end unstitched. Repeat until you have four pairs of booties.
-
-
3
Turn the dog bootie right side out, and turn the edge of the unstitched edge under about ½ inch. Press the folded edge and stitch it securely.
-
4
Cut the Velcro into four 4-inch pieces. Sew a piece of Velcro on each bootie so that you can pull the bootie snug around the dog's foot.

Tips & Warnings
The pattern is for a medium to large dog. If your dog is smaller, adjust the size of the dog bootie accordingly.
If you prefer, you can attach the Velcro to the bootie in Step 2. Simply pin the Velcro in place before stitching the booties together.
If you live in a very cold climate, your dog will love fleece booties.
If you live in a damp climate, you can line the booties with waterproof material. Denim is a good choice in hot climates.
Make sure the booties are snug but not so tight that they will cut off circulation or be uncomfortable for your dog.
