Step 1
Turn off the electrical power to your ceiling fan before you start working to clean ceiling fan switches.
-
Step 2
Use a vacuum cleaner with an attachment to clean all the dust off of your ceiling fan. Wipe every outer part of the ceiling fan down with a damp cloth. This gives you a clean surface on the outer part of your fan so that you can begin taking your switch out to be cleaned.
-
Step 3
Remove the switch that you want to clean. With the ceiling fan switch removed, use a can of compressed air to blow out dust or debris. You can buy cans of compressed air from office supply stores or computer equipment stores.
-
Step 4
Clean all ceiling fan switch contacts with a dry cloth to remove built-up oils and dust. Rub gently so that you don't scratch or damage the contacts in the ceiling fan switch.
-
Step 5
Lubricate ceiling fan switches with non-corrosive lubricant. This keeps your ceiling fan switches operating smoothly. Make sure your lubricant is the type that does not conduct electricity.
-
Step 6
Reinstall your clean ceiling fan switches. Check all of your connections. Make sure they are tight. Check to make sure your switch is moving correctly by flipping the switch in the different positions. Turn the power back on to make sure your ceiling fan is operating properly.
