If you either desire or need to live in a socialist state, it's important to remember that cultural adjustment may be required. Though on the surface many socialist states appear similar to a democratic republic, the closer you look, the more you'll find hidden differences.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Approach the new culture with respect and a desire to learn. To live in a socialist state you must make yourself as unobtrusive as possible in order to win friends and influence people in this new set of circumstances.

  2. Step 2

Budget appropriately for ordinary living costs. Many people are surprised to learn how high the cost of living can be in a socialist state because of its higher taxes.

  3. Step 3

Find other expatriates in the area and join social activities that allow you to become part of this community. It's always better to benefit from other people's mistakes than having to commit them yourself.

  4. Step 4

Accept the fact that there will be certain customs and habits that will appear strange or inappropriate to you. A socialist state supports a significantly different view of living and the day to day behavior of its citizens is going to be affected.

  5. Step 5

Remember that a socialist state stresses community self-regulation. If you do something the community deems inappropriate you may be directly confronted with this breach of etiquette.

  6. Step 6

Remain in contact with friends back home. If you live in a socialist state, it's important to remain grounded in your own national identity in order to avoid a sense of isolation and loneliness.
