How to Plan a Senior RV Trip

You might not think traveling by RV would be an affordable way to see the country, but the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association reports nearly 8 million American households have an RV. It's perfect for seniors, many of whom are on fixed incomes. In order to plan a senior RV trip that will be successful and won't break the bank, plan ahead, then keep working the plan once you're on the road.

Instructions

    • 1

Search for less expensive ways to enjoy the trip. For example, thousands of Sam's Club and Wal-Mart stores allow RV travelers to stay overnight in their parking lots while passing through. Don't pay for updated maps and RV travel guides either; there are websites with plenty to print out.

    • 2

Stay connected with family and friends via the Internet. If you don't have a wireless network for your RV, there are many libraries across the country that will let you use their computers at no charge.

    • 3

Plan off-season, or "shoulder season trips," as they are called in the travel industry. Those are the periods of time you'll most likely get the best prices at campgrounds, restaurants and attractions. Even gasoline is less expensive if you aren't traveling over holiday weekends. There are web sites that can help you estimate fuels costs depending on your route and destination.

    • 4

Find senior-friendly locations. These places cater to the over-50 crowd, offering special discounts or packages to help travelers save money or feel extra pampered.

    • 5

Pack lighter and your RV will get better gas mileage. Take only supplies needed for a specific journey and use the smaller sized containers if you're just going on a short trip.

Tips & Warnings

  • RV drivers of all ages should take an RV driving safety course before hitting the road. Senior-focused AARP and travel-focused AAA offer them throughout the country.
