Driving under the influence is dangerous and against the law. Each year, roughly one-fourth of traffic deaths are caused by a drunk driver. As a citizen, you can help stop a drunk driver and possibly save a life. The following will help you in your efforts in reporting a DUI to the local police department.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take notice of a car being drive by a driver who is possibly under the influence.

  2. Step 2

Keep your distance in order to be safe.

  3. Step 3

Take note of the make, model and color of the vehicle. Write down or memorize the license plate number and state, if possible.

  4. Step 4

Look at your surroundings. Notice your location and what direction is the possible DUI vehicle going. Note the last intersection or landmark that you have passed.

  5. Step 5

Call 911 and tell the representative what you have witnessed. Give them as much information as possible. Answer any questions they may ask.

  6. Step 6

Stay on the phone until the operator says it is ok to hang up or disconnect.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask for a on-duty supervisor if you are not satisfied with what the 911 operator has told you.
  • It is free to call 911 from a pay phone. Don't worry about putting in your quarter.
  • Never get into a car with a drunk driver.
  • Never follow, confront or stop a vehicle with a possible drunk driver. Stay far away from their vehicle while maintaining visual contact with the car itself so you can report its whereabouts to the authorities..
