Extended use or improper installation may lead to a required repair to your newel post. It is essential for the post to be secure in order to give the proper support to the banisters and entire staircase. If the newel post is loose, the entire staircase is loose. The following will help guide you in your efforts in fixing a loose newel post.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Install and angle an "L" bracket to the newel post. Screw the bracket into both the staircase and into the post. Remove carpet if necessary.

  2. Step 2

Find access under the newel post. If the newel post is overhead this will require you going through the floor, using care when on a ladder. If it is on the staircase, you may need to remove the outside covering to get access to under the stairs.

  3. Step 3

Install a 16-inch lag bolt into the newel post. Make sure it punctures the newel post in its center. You may need to use a hammer to get it started.

  4. Step 4

Verify the post is secure and no longer loose. If it is consider another bracket or try tightening again.

  5. Step 5

Repair the ceiling, carpet or stair casing using wood putty, sandpaper, paint or stain as necessary to make the effected area look good as new.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the angle bracket will be seen, chisel enough wood from the step and the post to install it. Cover the bracket with wood filler, sand and paint or stain as necessary.
  • Eight inches of the 16-inch lag bolt must go through the post. It may be necessary to remove sheet rock to guarantee this amount.

on 9/20/2008 I have a wooden newel post (painted) that my son's puppy has chewed on. Is there a way to fill it and repaint. The chew marks are not deep.

Thanks,
