How to Restore a Lowrider

One of the most distinctive styles of vehicle on the road is a lowrider and they've been around for a long time. Just as with all cars, lowriders live a good life and then they need to be restored. When you restore a lowrider, it can be harder to do than other restorations.

1. Locate your lowrider. If you already have a lowrider, move on to Step 2. Expect finding a lowrider to take time. Generally, lowriders are modified vintage cars designed to be especially close to the ground. A few lowriders are newer makes, but these are rare.
2. Find out what was done to the lowrider. Lowriders typically are cars that were modified with a hydralic suspension or an air bag suspension which allows them to lower to an inch from the ground. The previous owner is not only the best person but maybe the only person who can tell all the modifications done to make the car a lowrider. You can also have a mechanic or a car enthusiast look at your lowrider and point out modifications.
3. Rebuild and restore your lowrider. You need to identify parts that need restoration and do the work. If you're a shade tree mechanic, you can do much of the work yourself. This is the fun part and the idea is to enjoy it and be patient with your progress.
4. Get professional help as you restore parts. Look for a mechanic or shop that specializes in restoration. You can ask to see pictures of cars they've restored. You may want to have a professional remove rust, sandblast and paint the lowrider for you.
5. Make it flashy. Lowriders are know for their flashy style. You need a custom paint job that includes a layering technique that uses metal oxide flake or pearl flake under several other layers. Your detailing can include pinstripes, flames or murals. Most lowriders have leather, tweed or velvet fabric and many incorporate woodgrain into the interior.
6. Enjoy your newly restored lowrider. Take pictures of the newly restored low rider and put them side by side with the old pictures. Show your lowrider off to your friends and make good use enjoying every mile.
