Whether you're scoring sheet rock or cutting open a box of tile, you probably have a utility knife at your side. Using a utility knife properly can help you maintain safety, and allows you to get the project done more quickly.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose the utility knife that is appropriate for the job. There are all sizes and strengths of utility knives. Some are better for jobs that need precision. Usually the fixed blade that has a fold over top won't wiggle when you want it to remain steady. The standard heavy weight utility knife with a retractable blade is good for most other jobs.

  2. Step 2

Push the button down and push the blade forward for use, or unfold a fixed blade. The beauty of the newer utility knives is that you always have it on hand, but never have to have the blade exposed until you need it. Even smaller utility knives use a similar system. Modifications of the old fixed blade allow you to fold the knife closed.

  3. Step 3

Reverse the blade, change it or break it off and push a new one forward. The utility knife has various ways of helping you to keep a sharp blade. The smaller knives allow you to break off the old blade and push a new one forward.

  4. Step 4

Spray silicon on the nose of the retractable blade if it sticks. Sheet rock dust can clog those a bit, try a little spray to make its movements smooth.

  5. Step 5

Grasp the handle before you buy. The knife has to feel comfortable in your hand if you are going to use it often. This can make the difference in painful muscles at the end of the day.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never leave a blade extended when you put the knife back in your apron. You may have a leather apron, but the knife will eventually cut it. Don't store a fixed blade in your apron either.
