If you're having a problem with low current or electric switches that don't seem to be making proper contact, there's a chance they just need a good cleaning. Heat build-up in your wires might indicate a need for cleaning also. Read on to learn more. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Open the door on the electrical panel. Turn the breaker off that is supplying power to the electrical switch you are about to clean. Use a voltage tester on the electrical switch to make sure the power is off before you start to clean electric switch contacts.

    • 2

Remove the electrical switch. Check for freedom of movement in the operation of the electric switch contacts that you are about to clean.

    • 3

Go to your local home improvement store or an electrical supply store. Ask for a contact cleaner and a lubricant for switches. In most cases, your switch contacts will be oxidized. In oxidation, a film caused by air and moisture builds up. This prevents electrical current to flow through your switch when contact is made.

    • 4

Apply your contact cleaning lubricant to your electric switch contacts. Let stand approximately 5 to 10 minutes. Wipe clean with a dry cloth.

    • 5

Put a permanent lubricant on your clean electric switch contacts. This keeps the switch operating at full capacity and will prolong the life of the switch because it hinders corrosion and oxidation.

    • 6

Reinstall your clean electric switch contacts. Secure the cover plate on your electrical switch. Go to the electrical panel and turn on the breaker. Check your electrical switch for proper operation.
