How to Bleach Stains On Furniture

Restoring furniture can often involve changing the stain. In order to re-stain furniture, it is necessary to prepare the furniture. Part of the process is to bleach the stain that is already there. This is not hard but precautions should be taken. Bleach is a very strong chemical. Read on to learn more.

Things You'll Need:

  • Bleach
  • Clean cloths
  • Bristle brush
  • Rubber gloves
  • Face mask
  • Safety goggles
  1. Step 1

    Test the bleach on the furniture you want to stain. Make sure you know exactly what will happen and decide if you want to proceed with the bleaching process.

  2. Step 2

    Prepare the bleach solution according to the type of bleach you will use. Use the liquid bleach full strength out of the container.

  3. Step 3

    Apply the bleach to the furniture with a synthetic bristle brush. Apply along the grain of the wood and wet the wood completely. Do not over wet but be sure the wood is covered with the bleach.

  4. Step 4

    Wipe the wood clean with a damp cloth after applying the bleach. Now rinse the wood with clean water and dry with a clean cloth. Make sure to perform this step rapidly to prevent water from damaging the wood.

  5. Step 5

    Let the wood sit for at least two days before proceeding to sanding and applying stain to this furniture.

Tips & Warnings
  • Working with bleach can be hazardous so be sure the area you choose to work in is very well ventilated.
  • Be sure to wear rubber gloves, safety goggles and a face mask when using bleach. If you do get bleach on your skin be sure to wash it right away with clear water.
