Things You'll Need:
- Clean soft cloths.
- Suitable metal polishing solution.
-
Step 1
Prepare the metal. Clean the metal as much as possible before beginning to polish. Having a clean area to start will make it easier and quicker to polish and prevent scratching and excessive rubbing on dirty surfaces. As every metal has different properties, they all need to be cared for differently. Seek advice on how to do this correctly. (See resources).
-
Step 2
Choose the right polish. Select mild non abrasive solutions such as a brass polish and preserver or an antique shine solution for silver and gold. See resources for a complete list of solutions. Using the right polishing compounds and equipment are essential as incorrect choices could ruin the value and integrity of your metals. Use a separate good quality soft cloth for every project.
-
Step 3
Take your time. Slow polishing is said to bring out the brilliance of various types of metals. If you have rolled metal, steel and aluminum especially, buff in the direction of the grain. For even surfaces, always be consistent in your direction. If after careful polishing, the shine is still dull or the cloth has residue on it, repeat as many times as necessary.
-
Step 4
Clean up. Carefully dispose of any excess cleaning and polishing solutions and wrap these separately. If mixed, they could be highly flammable. Store your finished metals in a cool dry place in separate layers or containers to prevent chafing. Jewelry should be wrapped in a jewelry cloth.
