How to Take a Practice Learner's Permit Test

Every state has a Department of Motor Vehicles where you will apply for your learner's permit. A learner's permit gives a young teen experience to learn when he or she has not yet met state requirements for a registered license. When applying for a learners permit to drive, you must first meet the learners permit eligibility requirements. Read on to learn more.

Things You'll Need:

  • Social Security card
  • Parental consent form filled out and notarized
  • Birth certificate
  • Proof of residence
  1. Step 1

    Enroll in a driver's education training class.

  2. Step 2

    Study the driver's training manual for the written or online permit test. Upon completion, show proof of passing the test.

  3. Step 3

    Pass an eye test at Department of Motor Vehicles.

  4. Step 4

    Take a knowledge test. The knowledge test is a short test about the rules of the road. The process varies with each state.

  5. Step 5

    Bring necessary documentation with you to Department of Motor Vehicles. Bring your original birth certificate, Social Security card, and proof of where you live.

  6. Step 6

    Bring a licensed driver with you who is over 21 years of age. Wear your seat belts. Children under the age of 3 must be in approved car safety seats. You can only drive from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

  • Study hard. Prepare by studying online or reading your manual.
  • Photocopies of documents are strictly prohibited. Present original documents.
  • Ask a friend to help you study.
  • Don't drive without your permit.
