First aid procedures can help save a life. This is the reason that it is very important to teach children about first aid and what to do in the event of a medical emergency. A child can be taught first aid basics as young as preschool age. Read on to learn how.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Teach the child to use 911. Let them know that if there is an emergency then it is OK to use 911 and to give the operator their personal information.
Step2
Show them where the first aid kit is and explain the different items included. Do a run through on how to apply the bandages and use the antiseptic wipes. Let them know that the kit should only be used in the case of an emergency.
Step3
Practice different scenarios that require first aid. Provide step-by-step instruction on how to handle a burn, cut or unconscious caregiver. Quiz the child after you let them know how to do each thing.
Step4
Make a first aid chart together. The chart can have emergency numbers on it along with pictures that demonstrate how to handle different medical emergencies.
Step5
Take a safety course. Community centers and hospitals often offer classes that children can take that explain first aid procedures. Courses may discuss first aid techniques like CPR and the Heimlich maneuver.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remind your child that before he attempts to perform any sort of first aid, he should call for help first.
  • Let your child know that it must be a true emergency to use 911. Non-emergency calls tie up the line and can prevent someone from getting the help that they need.
