Choose the right drill bit for the job. For most basic jobs, you can use a standard set of twist bits. High Speed Steel bits can be used on timber, metal and plastics. Use screwdriver bits to drill pilot holes, screw or unscrew screws. For masonry work, use masonry bits. You can use a countersink drill bit or a flat wood bit to create recesses for screw or bolt heads.

Insert the bit into the drill and loosen the chuck with the chuck key. Open the chuck until it's open wide enough to slide the shaft of the drill bit into the chuck. Tighten the chuck to securely hold the drill bit.

Drill the surface by holding the drill in the palm of one hand. Use your other hand to pull the trigger or the drill. Press the spinning drill against the surface and drill.
