Replacing a lost or stolen driver's license is a huge drag, adding insult to injury. As if losing it or having it stolen isn't bad enough, you now have to fork out hard-earned cash for a replacement, which of course requires a trip to the ever-charming Department of Motor Vehicles. Follow these steps to make the process as smooth and painless as possible.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Cover your behind before doing anything about the new card. Call the three national credit reporting organizations to report your lost card, especially if your social security number was on it. The first is Equifax and can be reached at 1-800-525-6285. Next is Experience at 1-888-397-3742. Third is Trans Union at 1-800-680-7289. Finally, you should contact the Social Security Administration fraud line at 1-800-269-0271.
Step2
Do as much of the leg work as possible on the Internet. Go to your state's DMV site, which can be found by visiting the unofficial DMV Web site. Once you've found your state's site, download and print any necessary forms so you can fill them out at home and have them ready when you get to the DMV in person.
Step3
Visit your local deputy registrar's office. Take cash or check for the payment (in Ohio the cost is $19.50, to give you a general idea), along with a primary and secondary form of ID, such a social security card, passport or birth certificate and a marriage license, pilot's license or vehicle title. A complete list of options is available on your state's DMV Web site.
Step4
Call the nearest DMV if you should lose your card while travelling. Chances are, the DMV cannot provide you with a replacement in time for your return travel, but at least your request is on the record should you have any traffic violations while on vacation.
Step5
Keep a copy of the front and back of your driver's license in your purse or in a safe place at home. It's also smart to make copies of everything else in your wallet (i.e., credit cards).
